Description:
Most cases of workplace violence originate from strangers involving opportunistic criminals, dissatisfied customers or mentally ill perpetrators. Targets are usually not random, but rather, chosen based on perceived vulnerability, accessibility, reward, and minimal risk. Employees may be convenient outlets to satisfy criminal motives, displace anger or express displeasure with corporate practices. Employees who recognize risky situations, catalysts of aggression and early warning signs can diffuse problems before they become dangerous. Those who respond to aggressive encounters utilizing effective communication and problem solving skills can manage, control and resolve these situations. Those who become hardened targets limit their vulnerability to criminal victimization.
